Protest actions in Sweden against Turkey, an Erdogan doll outside Stockholm's city hall and a Koran burning at the Turkish embassy.

Recent events have resulted in an extensive disinformation campaign against Sweden, in which the country is described as hostile to Islam and a legitimate target for terrorism, according to the Psychological Defense Agency.

Magnus Ranstorp, terrorism researcher at the Defense Academy, believes that the campaign has further diluted the threat image that already exists against Sweden in the Muslim world as a result of the LVU campaign and the Easter riots.

- There has been a change in our security situation since the LVU campaign and the Easter coup, and so will this.

All in all, it has led to an elevated threat picture, he says.

The Security Police also assesses that the protest actions may be threatening.

However, the terrorist threat level remains at the same level as before, a third on a five-point scale.

The actors behind the campaign range from influencers to terrorists, according to Ranstorp.

- On top of this, we have the Arabic- and Turkish-speaking media that reinforce this and pump out disinformation in various channels.

Higher level of terror in Western missions

But Ranstorp currently considers it unlikely that the campaign would result in a terrorist act in Sweden.

The risk is all the greater in Western missions abroad, he believes.

- In this situation, the risk is greater when you are in Turkey and in other countries where emotions are high and where these issues lead to a heightened security situation, he says.

What does the threat picture against Sweden look like?
