In total, police region Mitt, which includes Uppsala, Västmanland and Gävleborg, received 6,020 calls related to mental illness in 2022. That does not include missing persons - where the majority of cases are linked to mental illness, according to the police.

- The police see a need for the healthcare system to expand its emergency resources in these emergency situations - when there is no threatening situation, says Marcus Svensson.

It was decided on a psychiatric ambulance

The political decision on such a resource was already made in 2020 when the hospital board commissioned Akademiska to introduce a so-called psychiatry ambulance.

The idea was that it would be in operation in the fall of 2021, but that has not been the case.

However, in a few months Region Uppsala and the University Hospital hope to have a new mobile unit in place.

More about that in the clip.
