The barely four-hour long hearing was conducted on August 10 last year in a conference room in lower Manhattan, New York.

The hearing was part of a civil fraud investigation and dealt with Trump's activities as a real estate mogul.

On the advice of his lawyer, Trump announced that he "respectfully declines to answer the questions in accordance with the rights and privileges that every citizen has under the Constitution of the United States."

He was referring to the Fifth Amendment, which protects people from testifying against themselves.

Trump: A Witch Hunt

Ahead of the hearing, Trump read a prepared statement in which he described the investigation as "the biggest witch hunt in our country's history."

He also accused State Attorney Letitia James - a Democrat - of being an "apostate" and an "out-of-control prosecutor".

At the beginning of the questioning, Trump is heard three times answering: "For all the reasons I stated in my answer, which is attached here in its entirety, I decline to answer the question."

He then repeats the phrase "same answer" to the remaining questions.

In total, the former president invoked the Fifth Amendment on over 400 occasions.

Was sued for $250 million

In the prepared statement, Trump himself reasons why he uses the Fifth Amendment.

“I asked once – if you're innocent, why are you invoking the Fifth Amendment?

Now I know the answer to that question,” Trump said, continuing:

"When your family, your business and everyone around you has become the target of an unfounded, politically motivated witch hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors and the fake news media, you have no choice."

In September 2022, New York State Attorney Letitia James chose to sue Donald Trump, three of his grown children and his $250 million family business.

The Trump family is suspected, among other things, of having lied to banks by having overvalued assets in order to obtain loans.
