The new police law in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which was passed in 2020, is partially unconstitutional.

Several regulations on surveillance measures by the police are not proportionate, said the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe on Wednesday.

The legislature must now improve.

The legal reform was controversial from the start, data protectionists feared violations of fundamental rights.

The Federal Constitutional Court has now declared, among other things, the regulations on residential surveillance and online searches to be wholly or partially incompatible with the Basic Law.

Five people, including a lawyer, a journalist, a climate activist and two football fans, had contacted the Federal Constitutional Court with the support of the Society for Freedom Rights.
