Hesse does not want to extend the deadline for submitting property tax returns.

Around three quarters of the declarations were received, said Finance Minister Michael Boddenberg (CDU) on Tuesday at the end of the submission deadline in Wiesbaden.

"Given the good response rate in Hesse, there is no need to extend the deadline." But Boddenberg warned everyone who has not yet submitted to do so soon.

He announced a "personal reminder letter" from the tax administration after Easter.

Bayern, on the other hand, single-handedly extended the deadline by three months on Tuesday.

The owners' association Haus & Grund Hessen then also called for an extension of the deadline.

For reasons of equal treatment, it is incomprehensible why a taxpayer in Bavaria is given more time than an owner in Hesse, according to the association.

Originally, the new property tax returns should have been submitted by the end of October 2022.

This deadline was then extended in all federal states up to and including Tuesday (January 31).

Take the yellow card seriously

"The submission is still possible and necessary even after the deadline," emphasized Boddenberg.

The feedback of the past few days suggested that many people were there and would finish the explanations in the coming days and weeks.

"Anyone who should not submit after the reminder letter has to expect that the tax authorities will appreciate the information," announced Boddenberg.

"No one should let that happen."

According to the consumer portal Finanztip.de, the estimate can be expensive because plots of land may be estimated to be larger.

Reminders, such as those announced by the Hessian tax authorities, should not be seen as an extension of the deadline, but rather as a yellow card to which you should react quickly.

According to the survey by Finanztip.de - the Hessian Ministry of Finance does not provide any information on this on request - the late surcharges should initially be rather moderate at 25 euros per month.
