In recent years, thefts of catalytic converters have increased greatly in the country.

Lately there has been a wave of thefts in Norr- and Västerbotten and now during the weekend in Östersund.

- We suspect that it is organized, says Maria Könberg, municipal police in Östersund to SVT Nyheter Jämtland.

Mainly, it is cars of slightly older models that fall victim to the thefts.

The catalytic converters that clean exhaust gases in a gasoline-powered car contain sought-after precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium.

It doesn't take the thieves long to steal a catalytic converter.

If there are several thieves working together, a theft can be done in as little as 30 seconds.
