When there is a lack of oxygen in the brain, two million cells die every minute, therefore every second counts when a patient with a suspected stroke comes into Södersjukhuset's emergency room.

Time is decisive for the extent of damage to the brain.

If the time between arrival and until clot-dissolving treatment is instituted is shortened, less rehabilitation is required.

- The exercise is to reduce errors due to the human factor.

It is staff from the emergency, X-ray and neuro who train together, says Adrian Iliescu, senior physician at Södersjukhuset's emergency department.

Develop the same routines together

Today, 60 percent of the hospital's stroke patients are treated within 30 minutes, but the goal is for the figure to improve.

As the healthcare staff do not always work together, it is particularly important that communication is fast.

- They must have the same routines and the same language, says Adrian Iliescu.

The number of stroke patients is decreasing

In 2021, 94 women died of stroke and 66 men in Stockholm County.

In Sweden, the number of people who have had a stroke has decreased, and Stockholm County has the lowest percentage of those affected.

Between the years 2016 -2020, just under 200 people fell ill per 100,000 inhabitants in Stockholm County, the National Board of Health and Welfare's statistics show.
