China News Service, January 31 (Xinhua) According to Reuters, an explosion in a mosque in the northwestern Pakistani city of Peshawar on the afternoon of the 30th killed at least 59 people, including 27 policemen, and injured 147 others, some in critical condition.

  The mosque that was attacked was reportedly located in the compound of the police headquarters and counter-terrorism unit in Peshawar, Khyber Pashtun province, so many of the casualties were police officers.

  "There were more than 400 people packed into the mosque compound and many of the 170 wounded were in critical condition," Peshawar police chief Saddique Khan said.

  "We found traces of explosives...it was a suicide bombing," Ijaz Khan added.

The police are currently investigating how the suspect broke through the security cordon to carry out the suicide bombing and whether there was any inside assistance.

  "We didn't know what happened because the explosion was deafening. It sent me flying from the balcony," said Mush Takhan, a policeman who was injured in the explosion.

  According to live footage broadcast by television, one wall of the mosque was completely destroyed, and dozens of people were trapped in the rubble. The police and residents cooperated to remove debris from the scene and carried the injured on their shoulders.

  According to reports, this attack is the worst terrorist attack the region has encountered since March 2022.

Authorities are currently investigating the attack, and no organization or individual has claimed responsibility for the incident.

  Pakistani Prime Minister Shabaz said the explosion was a "suicide attack".
