Toni 2 has come up with a tough competitor: Hijos de Tomás, a new piano bar with the guarantee

of the La Ancha family behind

it , led by the Redruello brothers.

Eva Páez is one of the artists who will put up a fight against Patrick and Jesús Serrano, the classic pianists of the temple of the Madrid night, where it is almost impossible

to enter because of their long lines.

Located in the recently opened Hotel Thompson, in Plaza del Carmen, Hijos de Tomás is inspired

by the bars of the 40s and 50s

that landed on the Gran Vía in the wake of the North American

speak easy

bars .

Red sofas, wooden coffered ceilings, marble tables decorated with candles and, of course,

a grand piano

, the absolute star of the place.

That is the place of operations of Eva Páez, architect, programmer, pianist, singer, actress and multifaceted woman where there are.

At the age of four she was already excelling in singing at school and she was recommended to take piano lessons.

She spent years giving lessons on this instrument, but she grew tired

of "being stuck in a score"

, of only playing Mozart and Beethoven and of not being taught anything about contemporary music.

For this reason, this Madrid native from Boadilla del Monte has traveled through all musical styles:

from heavy metal to a cappella choirs

and from indie to pop.

Eva combines her work at the piano with

a musical improvisation show

at the Off de la Latina theater, where she parodies the influencers along with two other actresses.

Master of ceremonies

Her task at Hijos de Tomás is not limited to playing the piano, but rather she has to be the master of ceremonies, directing the public,

raising the atmosphere

and taking note of how the dance floor is working.

-And, what is the most requested song?

-

My great Raphael night

- she answers without hesitation sitting in a cocktail bar chair.

The classics always work and

Como una ola

by Rocío Jurado goes hand in hand with

Chica yeyé

by Concha Velasco, although

songs with a flamenco flavor

are gaining more and more followers, dragged down by the success of C. Tangana and Rosalía.

Every night is different in this piano bar where the repertoire changes depending on the audience: «We have a very varied audience: more leisurely tourists who come to listen and those who come to have the last drink,

who sing all the songs

.

They are nights with a lot of energy », she says satisfied.

From her grand piano, Eva has to distinguish what is working and what is not: «We realize everything.

If they are listening to us or are distracted

.

If I have a group in front of me that is delivered, I focus on playing for them».

As in Toni 2,

anyone can get on stage

to interpret their versions, as is the case with Nika, a young Ukrainian who arrived in Spain 10 months ago and who sings like angels.

But if there is something that differentiates Hijos de Tomás from Toni 2 , it

is its careful cocktail bar

, which alternates classic drinks with signature cocktails, inspired by emblematic characters.

In this bar you can taste a

South Face, Al Capone's favorite drink

with gin, Sanlúcar manzanilla, mint and cucumber tonic or a Compay, a tribute to the Cuban musician, with rum, tobacco liqueur, red vermouth and molasses.

After visiting all the karaoke bars in the city, Eva now enjoys her passion improvising on the piano, where she takes turns with other musicians such as Juan Zelada.

The local programming is directed by

Javier Gismero

, singer and guitarist, who was already in charge of organizing the dinner concerts at Fismuler, another of the La Ancha group's restaurants.

Eva was once in Toni 2, but she still has the thorn in her because they didn't let her sing: "They are very elitist."

That is why she is now clear about it:

«Hijos de Tomás is much better than any karaoke and than Toni 2»

.
