South Africa's worst energy crisis ever: "The situation is bad"

Johan Ripås, SVT's Africa correspondent, has met the energy expert Lungile Mashele, who talks about how power cuts affect society.

- We have had many children who have had to be moved from hospital wards because there was no electricity there, and they could have died.

She further says that the situation is bad.

- During 2022, we had around 208 days of electricity offloading.

Now during 2023, we have had electricity relief every day.

South Africa's electricity problems are costing the country billions daily.

Everything is based on an aging coal power generation and decades of lack of maintenance throughout the electricity grid.

The lack of willingness to let new players into the market and invest in renewable energy despite enormous opportunities is also criticized.
