Russia announces increasing gains in eastern Ukraine

Russia announced that its forces made increasing gains in eastern Ukraine today, Monday, to add more to its biggest gains in months, after relentless battles.

The Russian-installed governor of the Donetsk region, Denis Pushilin, said the forces had cemented a foothold in Volydar, a coal mine whose ruins have been a Ukrainian stronghold since the start of the war.

The head of the "Wagner" private military group said yesterday that his fighters had secured control of the village of Blahodatne, near northern Bakhmut, a city that has been the focus of Russian attacks that have been going on for months.

"The situation is very difficult," Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address late on Sunday. "There are continuous Russian attacks in Bakhmut, Volydar and other sectors of the Donetsk region."
