It was at the beginning of January that 29-year-old Tire Nichols was beaten by five police officers during an intervention in Memphis, Tennessee.

Three days later he died in hospital.

This weekend, the images from the intervention were made public, showing a brutal assault.

- 37 minutes of material from mainly the police's body-worn cameras but also from a surveillance camera, which shows large parts of this process and how the policemen kick Nichols' head, says Fouad Youcefi in SVT's Morgonstudion.

- Many of course remember the images from George Floyd and the police intervention that led to his death a few years ago.

But it was a different kind of violence, it was a knee to his neck for quite a few minutes.

This is a different kind of brutality, perhaps more reminiscent of the police assault of Rodney King in 1991, which then led to enormous protests.

Called for peaceful protests

Tire Nichols' mother has also called for peaceful protests ahead of the images being released.

Five police officers are said to have been involved in the assault.

They have since been fired and are now suspected of murder, aggravated assault and even kidnapping.

Two people in the emergency services have also been suspended from their jobs due to the fact that it took so long for Tire Nichols to receive treatment.
