Over $500 million in aid to fight the crisis around Lake Chad

The states bordering Lake Chad and international donors have announced aid to protect millions of civilians threatened in this region by armed jihadist groups.

"Member States and institutional donors have announced the granting of more than 500 million dollars" to the crisis in the region, indicates a press release transmitted this Friday to AFP, after a meeting at the beginning of the week in Niamey, in Niger.

Aid mainly intended for the protection of civilians affected by insecurity around Lake Chad, a region plagued by jihadist violence for the past ten years.

And the needs are enormous: according to the UN, nearly 24 million people are affected by this crisis and 5.3 million of them are still displaced.

Added to the security crisis are the effects of climate change and the impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, exacerbating the deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

For the United Nations, funding requirements for emergency response have increased by $259 million since 2018, when more than $2 billion was pledged for the region by donors during a meeting. in Berlin, Germany.

But the emergency should not be the only data taken into account warned during this meeting in Niamey, the UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs.

If we do not tackle the root causes of the crisis, we will not be able to heal the wounds of the region
