A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck northwestern Iran.



According to the Iran Earthquake Center affiliated with the University of Tehran, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred near Hoi, West Azerbaijan, at around 9:44 p.m. local time yesterday (28th).



The epicenter is 38.59 degrees north latitude and 44.89 degrees east longitude, and the depth of the support is 7 km.



West Azerbaijan Governor Mohammad Motamedian said 70 villages were damaged by the earthquake, with three deaths and 816 injured.



Local media reported that gas supplies were disrupted in the earthquake area and residents were suffering from the cold.



On the 18th, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake in this area also caused a number of injuries.



Iran is located on the boundary between the Arabian and Eurasian plates, so earthquakes occur frequently.



In 2003, a magnitude 6.6 earthquake in southern Iran killed 31,000 people, and in 1990 in northern Iran, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake killed 40,000 people.



It is said that about 200,000 people died in the area during the earthquake that occurred in 856.
