The Mossos d'Esquadra have arrested the driver of a vehicle that ran over an elderly couple after losing control.

The victims died shortly after as a result of their injuries.

The deadly accident took place on Calle del Téxtil de Navarcles (Barcelona) this afternoon when, for unknown reasons, the 20-year-old driver could not control the car in which he was driving and rammed the victims, a man and a woman 72 and 77 years old, who were walking around the area at that time, near a parking lot.

As a result of this accident, the Mossos began an investigation to clarify the causes of the double hit-and-run and arrested the suspect accused of two crimes of reckless homicide.

Police sources indicated that he has given a negative breathalyzer and drug test.

The suspect is expected to go to court in the next few hours.

Four ambulances from the Emergency Medical System (SEM) went to the scene of the accident but could not do anything to save the victims of the serious injuries caused in the accident and who died almost instantly.

In a statement, the Navarcles City Council assured that it was "a sad day" for this double fatal attack and they wanted to offer their condolences to the families of the victims in addition to asking for "the utmost respect" for them "in such hard times."
