THE ESSENTIAL

  • Ukraine was the target Thursday of new Russian bombardments, which left at least eleven dead and eleven injured and caused power outages.

According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, General Valery Zalouzhny, Russia fired 55 missiles on Ukraine on Thursday and “47 were destroyed, including twenty” near kyiv.

Ukraine also said it shot down 24 Iranian-made Shahed explosive drones overnight.

  • This new wave of bombardments comes the day after the green light from Washington and Berlin for the transfer of dozens of heavy tanks to kyiv.

Volodymyr Zelensky, according to whom this is an “important step for the final victory”, thanked his allies.

But he noted that "the key" to success was now "the speed and volume" of deliveries, kyiv asking for hundreds of armored vehicles.

The Ukrainian president has also called for fighter jets and long-range missiles, as many weapons as Westerners have so far refused to provide.

  • For the time being in the East, “the fighting is intensifying”, underlined Wednesday evening the Ukrainian Deputy Minister of Defense Ganna Maliar.

The Russian forces there are "in numerical superiority", she said, citing the Bakhmout area, which Moscow troops have been trying to seize for several months, but also that around Vougledar, a locality in the south- west of Donetsk.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia seems to be stepping up offensives on the front line to “disperse” Ukrainian forces in order to “create the conditions for a decisive offensive operation”.

With the push of Russian forces into eastern Ukraine, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees warned Thursday that Europeans should prepare for a likely new wave of displaced people fleeing the fighting.

“Any exacerbation of the war is likely to cause new displacements, one way or another, and we must prepare for this,” Filippo Grandi said in an interview with AFP in kyiv.

"As we have seen everywhere, in Mariupol, in Kherson, whenever the fighting escalates, people will naturally try to take cover," he continued, referring to two major battles in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, launched in February 2022.

“We say to the Ukrainian government, but also to the governments of neighboring countries, to be ready, to prepare for any eventuality,” he adds.
