Xavier Melki, Les Républicains mayor of Franconville (Val-d'Oise), has decided to go on strike.

A decision he took to protest against the lack of state aid which risks leading to an increase in taxes for his municipality, reports BFM Paris Ile-de-France.

Call for mobilization

It has been more than a week since the elected official canceled all his meetings and cut ties with state services until the vote on the 2023 budget. The mayor wishes to protest against the lack of aid in the face of the rise in energy prices and the fall in state grants.

For him, it is impossible to vote for a budget in such a complicated situation.

"We've been voting for unbalanced budgets for 40 years," he told our colleagues.

He also deplored the lack of answers to questions from elected officials on the part of deputies.

But what motivated him to make this decision was the announcement of the increase in social security contributions.

The elected official is therefore looking for a way to rebalance his budget without charging his constituents.

He even hesitates to "close the canteen or close the ice rink and the swimming pool", to be able to save money.

To avoid this and maintain the bond of trust with citizens, Xavier Melki calls on associations of elected officials to join him in this protest.
