The right hand of Ada Colau in the Barcelona City Council,

Jordi Martí

, defended the plan to persecute the Spaniard revealed last week by EL MUNDO and which, with a budget of 37 million, contains measures such as increasing inspections in shops to check if use Catalan, favor companies that label in that language, use it "by default" in the institutional communications of the Consistory or implement Language Day to promote the use of the regional language.

"We will invent everything possible so as not to lose our own language," Martí claimed when questioned on the matter by Cs.

«Castilian is a global language and its continuity is guaranteed.

Of the two official languages, there is one that is clearly in the minority and in clear decline”, argued the deputy mayor to defend the linguistic measures that the Colau Executive intends to implement.

«Catalan tends to go backwards and it is the obligation of governments to take all possible actions so that it does not continue to decline: use it more in public administration, prioritize it more in education, do everything not to lose the language that allows us to think in a way singular”, added Martí.

According to data from the Consistory, 26% of Barcelonans never use Catalan and another 27% declare that they use it little.

Colau is especially alarmed by "the minority use of Catalan among young people in Barcelona", which is reduced to levels of 14% in certain areas of the city and which in none exceeds 41%.
