After Twitter in November, the Meta group in turn announced on Wednesday its intention to end the suspension of the former president's Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks.

The sanction was decided on January 7, 2021, the day after the assault on the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump.

When Facebook censored Donald Trump's accounts the day after the Capitol attack, it was officially to prevent further violence against democracy.

Two years later, it's quite the opposite: the social network giant justifies the lifting of this sanction... in the name of the defense of democratic pluralism.

The public needs to be able to hear what politicians are saying so they can make informed choices

,” says Nick Clegg, Meta's head of international affairs.

A decision supported by the ACLU, the powerful organization for the defense of American civil rights, yet classified on the left but very criticized by many elected Democrats and disinformation experts.

To reassure them, Meta promises new security measures to prevent abuse and assures that the risk to public safety has "

decreased enough

" since January 2021 to allow the return of Trump, now a candidate for his re-election and who himself had asked the lifting of his censorship to Mark Zuckerberg.

This suspension "

should never happen to a sitting president

" reacts Donald Trump on his social network, Truth Social, with which the ex-president is still bound by an exclusive contract which requires him to reserve for this platform extreme right confidential the premiere of its posts for at least 6 hours.
