In search of secret documents.. Re-examining the personal records of former US presidents

The US National Archives has requested a re-examination of the personal records of former presidents and vice presidents in search of classified documents, after reports that such documents were in the possession of President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence, two informed sources said Thursday.

The administration sent a letter Thursday to representatives of former presidents and former vice presidents through to Ronald Reagan to ensure compliance with the Presidential Records Act.

The law states that any records that emerge or are received by presidents are owned by the US government and will be handled by the National Archives at the end of their terms of office, according to the two sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the investigation.

The US National Archives also sent a letter to representatives of former presidents Donald Trump, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George HW Bush and Ronald Reagan, and to Vice Presidents Pence, Biden, Dick Cheney, Al Gore and Dan Quayle.

CNN was the first to report the content of the letter.
