Many unexpected things can happen on board a long-haul flight.

The flight crew of Emirates flight EK 319 direct between Tokyo Narita and Dubai International on January 19, for example, had to manage a birth on board, relays CNN on Wednesday.

A woman gave birth during this 12-hour journey.

Medically taken care of by the crew, the baby and the mother are doing well.

Upon their arrival in Dubai, parent and child were then "welcomed by local medical staff", explained Emirates to our colleagues.

An equipped and trained crew

The company specifies on its website that its on-board personnel are trained in first aid.

The devices are equipped with first aid kits and defibrillators for cases of cardiac arrest.

The latter equipment is increasingly common in aircraft.

To avoid dangerous situations, Emirates, like many companies, allows travelers to board up to 7 months of pregnancy, except for medical problems.

Passengers who are 29 weeks or more pregnant may however be allowed to fly with a medical certificate from their doctor or midwife.

No one is generally allowed to board from 32 weeks gestation for a multiple pregnancy or 36 weeks gestation for a single pregnancy.

Rare situations

These events therefore remain relatively rare on board.

Last May, a woman had given birth in the bathroom of the plane during a Frontier Airlines flight between Denver and Colorado Springs.

A birth also occurred on a flight from Accra to Washington in January 2022.

It is not known, however, whether these babies have been granted the right to travel for free on the company's flights, as was the case for a child born in 2016 on board a Buraq Air flight.
