German police announced today, Wednesday, that at least two people were killed and five others injured in a knife attack on a regional train in northern Germany, and indicated that the alleged perpetrator of the accident had been arrested.

A spokesman for the Flensburg police said that the attack took place on Wednesday afternoon on a local train heading from the city of Kiel to Hamburg in the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein.

In statements to the German news agency, a spokesman for the Federal Police said that a man attacked passengers on the train with a knife before it arrived at Bruckstedt station at around 3:00 pm local time.

The spokesman added that the man was arrested by police shortly afterwards in Bruckstedt.

The spokesman added that the background to the incident is still unknown, as the station in Bruckstedt has been closed until the police take action.
