A man was accidentally shot by a dog this weekend in the United States.

The animal stepped on a gun in the back seat of a pick-up truck.

The hunter, installed in the front of the vehicle, was fatally shot, local police said.

This tragedy occurred in Sumner County, Kansas.

The animal was in the back of the vehicle, where "hunting equipment and a rifle" were deposited, when he "stepped on the weapon, causing the detonation", said the sheriff's office.

The victim, a 30-year-old man, was sitting in the passenger seat when he was hit.

He “died of his injury at the scene,” authorities added.

"The investigation is continuing, but preliminary information indicates that this was a hunting accident," the sheriff's office said.

Authorities did not say who the 30-year-old owned the dog.
