UN Secretary-General urges Taliban to reverse ban on girls' education

On World Education Day, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called on the Afghan Taliban to reverse the ban on Afghan women and girls' access to secondary and higher education, calling it "disgraceful and self-destructive".

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) dedicated World Education Day this year to girls and women in Afghanistan.

Afghan citizens, especially women, have defended their rights in various forms, including public demonstrations, which are usually suppressed by the Taliban.

University lecturers have resigned and some students have left their classes in solidarity with their female classmates.

Seljay Sahar, a young Afghan girl who refused to prevent girls from getting an education and opened a free classroom in the east of the country, told the German Press Agency that she is determined to continue despite the challenges.

She described the year in which schools were closed as "a very difficult and painful year, like being held in a prison. But I will continue my fight as best I can."
