23 years and 7 days old: the title of the oldest dog in the world has been granted to Spike, a chihuahua who lives with his family in Ohio, in the United States.

The Guinness World Records formalized the information in a press release published on January 19.

He succeeds a female fox terrier, who died last October at the age of 22.

Spike was taken in by Rita Kimball when he was already 10 years old.

This mother found him in the parking lot of a shopping center when he had been abandoned and had been wandering for several days.

“He had his back shaved, had bloodstains around his neck from a chain or rope, and looked pretty rough,” Rita Kimball said in the statement.

This is Spike.

He is officially the oldest living dog in the world, at a spry 23 years and 52 days young.

That means he was born in 1999. Claims the secret to his longevity is frequent, uninterrupted naps.

Almost blind and hard of hearing

The Chihuahua has shared the daily life of the Kimballs for 13 years and coexists with other animals.

It was when he learned of the death of the fox terrier Pebbles during an issue of The

 Tonight Show Starring

Jimmy Fallon

that Spike's owners decided to come forward.

They found that their dog was even older than the previous record holder.

But at over 23, the Chihuahua suffers from health concerns.

"He's friendly, but since he's almost blind and hard of hearing, he sometimes gets irritable and just wants to be left alone," says Rita Kimball.

The latter, however, reveals Spike's secrets for this incredible longevity: walks, naps, visits to farm animals, a bath every Saturday evening and a few Doritos.
