More than 120,000 Russian soldiers have been killed in Ukraine, Ukrainian forces claim.

According to Newsweek, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine counted 120,160 Russian soldiers killed in the war that began on February 24 last year.

Ukraine's General Staff said 20,000 Russian soldiers had died in the past month alone.

Fierce fighting is taking place around Bahmut, an eastern strategic point occupied by Ukraine, due to the Russian military's man-made tactical offensive.

Ukraine's General Staff added that as of the date of the announcement on the 21st, 860 Russian soldiers had been killed in the past 24 hours.

Newsweek commented that it could not verify the figure, but that it would help identify trends in troop losses on the Russian side.

Russia has not made any further official announcements since it said in September of last year that its death toll stood at 5,937.

Ukraine estimated on the 7th of this month that about 10,000 Russian soldiers were killed in the two weeks from the 21st of last month to the 5th of this month.

On the 21st of last month, the number of Russian troops killed exceeded about 100,000, and claimed that Russia was losing an average of 10,000 troops every month.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has given figures that the Russians have lost 3,140 tanks, 6,256 armored fighting vehicles (AFVs) and 2,135 artillery pieces so far.
