Podemos and Izquierda Unida are advancing in the disappearance of the Unidas Podemos brand for the next regional and municipal elections on May 28.

After almost half a year of reflection on this possibility within the coalition, the two partners are already closing their first electoral agreements in the autonomous communities, choosing other formulas for the name.

Mainly the acronyms are recovered on the ballot, which will return

IU

to maximum visibility after its name was sacrificed in the historic pact of 2016, when it was justified that it was included in the generic term "United", first, and " United", later.

The steps that are being taken to discard the brand, on which wear is recognized due to the convulsive passage of time in the political space, take place at the same time that Yolanda Díaz is firmly committed to surpassing the acronym of United We Can to create a candidacy with a new air that attends the general elections under the name of

Sumar

or another.

Officially,

Podemos

and

IU

have already sealed three electoral agreements for May, although there are many more that are in an imminent situation.

These are the

Community of Madrid,

Region of Murcia

and

Navarra

.

The most recent pact has been the Murcian one, announced on Wednesday, the first that the two parties managed to seal in the region, after not being possible in 2019. The electoral formula for which they have opted is "Podemos-IU" in the regional level while in the municipal it will be reversible depending on whether the person at the top of the list belongs to the formation led by Alberto Garzón.

In other words, there will be ballots that are "IU-Podemos".

What is relevant about this agreement in Murcia is that it opens a path and confirms a preference, especially on the part of the federal leadership of IU, to recover the initials in the name.

On the other hand, the Executive of Podemos is the one who was most reluctant to return to the initials and who defended using the brand that is used in the general elections to attend

Congress

and

the Senate

.

In the

Community of Madrid

there is still no official name, despite the fact that there is an agreement between the regional authorities.

It is waiting, say the sources consulted, for the end of the primaries in IU, which will be resolved next week.

However, for a long time everything has been aimed at using Podemos-IU.

The case of

Navarra

is unique, since as it includes other regional formations, the official name will be

Contigo Navarra

.

This brand will be an exception.

And it is that,

Podemos

categorically rules out inventing new names after what happened in

Andalusia , where the

Por Andalucía

brand

reaped a resounding failure at the polls, in addition to opening wounds that are difficult to heal between leaders of

Podemos

,

IU

and people close to

Yolanda Díaz

for the way everything was managed.

It was just after that when, last summer,

Podemos

and

IU

opened a debate on what to do with the

Unidas Podemos

brand .

In a context, moreover, in which it was taken into account that

Díaz

aspired to present a new name for the autumn of 2023. IU always emphasizes that the

Unidas Podemos

brand was born with the vocation of being used only for the general ones, and that since 2019 there are cases in which it has not been used.

However, the parliamentary groups of

Madrid

,

the Valencian Community

or the

Balearic Islands

use that name today.

An alliance since 2016

It was with the name of Unidos Podemos that the alliance between Podemos and IU started, with that "pact of the bottles", facing the generals of 2016. Everything was bet on the 'sorpasso' to the PSOE but it was not achieved.

It was already for the following calls when the name was feminized and it was renamed United We Can.
