The decision to supply Brussels with tanks for the Ukrainian army has not yet been made due to the position of the German authorities.

This was stated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Diario.

“Personally, I think that in the current state of war, tanks should be supplied to Ukraine.

This is a political decision that has not yet been made, mainly due to the evasiveness of Germany," TASS quoted him as saying.

At the same time, pressure on Chancellor Olaf Scholz is increasing in Germany itself.

Recall that this week a meeting of the contact group of NATO countries on Ukraine was held at the American base in Ramstein.

As a result, the parties did not agree on the supply of Leopard 2 battle tanks to the Kyiv regime.

At the same time, the new Minister of Defense of Germany, Boris Pistorius, ordered an audit of the stocks of armored vehicles for possible delivery to Ukraine, InoTV reports.

Earlier there were reports that Scholz was unwilling to supply heavy military equipment because of the threat of an escalation of the conflict in Ukraine and its escalation into a clash between NATO and Russia.

Meanwhile, in 2022, Germany provided support to Ukraine in the amount of over €12 billion and intends to continue this course in 2023.

In turn, the chairman of the defense committee in the Bundestag, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, called this position of the German chancellor a real "catastrophe."

The chairman of the faction of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Rolf Mützenich, said that such aggressive rhetoric and actions would only push the country towards a military conflict.

“Those who talk about tanks today will shout about planes or troops tomorrow.

Politics during the war in Europe is carried out not in the style of rituals of indignation or rapid breathing, but with clarity and sanity, ”he told Die Zeit.

His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

According to the German media, German society has a controversial attitude towards the issue of supplying battle tanks to Ukraine.

46% of survey participants were in favor, 43% were against, another 11% of respondents refrained from a specific answer, writes Das Erste with reference to its own opinion poll.

At the same time, the former judge of the Supreme Court of Germany, Thomas Fischer, in his article for Der Spiegel urged Berlin to seriously consider the issue of supplying heavy armored vehicles to Ukraine.

He also noted that the German society must answer the question of whether it is ready to spend billions on the further arming of Ukraine.

At the same time, he does not consider the strategy of allocating ever new amounts of money to the Kyiv regime convincing.

"All this iron will become rusty scrap metal"

Earlier, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev said that the supply of modernized T-72 tanks, Leopard 2 and other armored vehicles by the West would not help the Kyiv regime.

“All this iron, in any case, will soon become rusty scrap metal and will not save the artificial country that is falling apart,” he pointed out.

In turn, the presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the intentions of Western countries to transfer their heavy armored vehicles to Ukraine, emphasized that this would not be able to change the situation "on the ground."

“The special military operation will continue.

These tanks are on fire and will continue to burn just like the rest.

The goals of the special military operation will be achieved and will be achieved,” said the official representative of the Kremlin.

Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov also warned that any weapons supplied by Western countries to Ukraine would be destroyed.

“It should become obvious to everyone: no matter what weapons the Americans or NATO supply to the Zelensky regime, we will destroy it,” the diplomat explained.

At the same time, on January 22, State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin noted that the provision of offensive weapons to the Ukrainian military by the West would lead to Russia's retaliatory measures using more powerful weapons.

“By their decisions, Washington and Brussels are leading the world to a terrible war: to a completely different military action than today, when strikes are carried out exclusively on military and critical infrastructure used by the Kyiv regime.

Given the technological superiority of Russian weapons, foreign politicians making such decisions need to understand that this could end in a global tragedy that will destroy their countries, ”he wrote on his Telegram channel.
