Two Basque mountaineers, one from

Abadiño

(Bizkaia) and the other from

Vitoria

, have disappeared in

Patagonia

, on the border between Argentina and Chile, after being surprised by an avalanche, according to EiTB.

The mountaineers were descending Fitz Roy Peak at the time of the event.

They were accompanied by a third companion, a resident of the Biscayan town of Igorre, who emerged alive from the avalanche and was later able to raise the alarm.

All three have experience in the mountains.

The

Fitz Roy peak

has an altitude of 3,405 meters and stands on the border between Argentina and Chile.

It is a mountain that is not excessively high but whose ascent is considered "extremely difficult".
