• A survey was launched among winegrowers at the request of the Gironde prefecture, to take stock of the wine crisis.

  • It shows that out of about 4,000 winegrowers in the department, 1,320 declare themselves in difficulty.

And a quarter of those want to completely stop and totally uproot their vines.

  • The next crisis unit must disseminate the full results of the survey, which should be used to establish an action plan to support the sector.

The figures are at the height of the malaise within Bordeaux viticulture.

Nearly 30% of the profession is in difficulty, i.e. 1,320 winegrowers, according to the survey commissioned by the prefect from the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture to take stock, while a chronic crisis of overproduction of wine prevails in Bordeaux.

More than a quarter of those who declare themselves in difficulty (about 330 people) want to completely stop their activities and uproot all of their vines.

The others want to continue to cultivate vines but by reducing the size of their plots by uprooting and by considering other plant productions.

Olive and hazelnut crops are most often mentioned.

"There are also many who wish to develop wine tourism and agritourism approaches", specifies the Chamber, this Friday, in its press release.

Very large increase in winegrowers with negative income

The survey also shows that those who want to quit are on average in their sixties and have no successor or buyer.

And, those who want to continue by diversifying are more on average in their fifties.

“#viticulture is going through a crisis that affects us.

A crisis unit was created to establish an action plan.

We have leads and I hope that we will soon be able to present solutions.

“We have seen a very strong increase since 2018 in the number of winegrowers who have a negative income or below the SMIC, observes Philippe Abadie, director of the business service at the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture.

We only sell 4 million hectoliters when the vineyard produces 5.5 million”.

The downturn in the Chinese market and the acceleration of the fall in wine sales in France help to explain this wine crisis.

On the occasion of the next crisis unit, more detailed results of this survey will be presented.

They should make it possible to help the authorities establish an action plan for the sector.
