A few weeks ago, at least three reindeer were hit in the same day in the Umeå region and the Midlands.

It is the heavy snowfalls that have caused the reindeer to seek the roads, and then find it difficult to get out of there due to high plow edges.

The reindeer are also drawn to the roads to ingest salt.

- I understand that people can be annoyed that there is a large pile of reindeer in the middle of the road, but we do our best to get the reindeer back into the forest, says reindeer herder Olle Larsson.

Warns on social media

Several Sami villages use social media to reach out with information about the areas in which the reindeer move - in the hope of reducing the number of accidents.

- I write on social media and inform different groups about where we released the reindeer, which roads may be relevant and where motorists should pay extra attention, says Marja Skum, who belongs to Gran's Sami village.
