Faced with the commissioning and multiplication of electric scooters in large cities which at times cause serious accidents, some cities in France are taking measures to regulate this service.

In Bordeaux, very concrete rules have been in place since last November.

What fate for scooters?

While the commissioning and multiplication of this means of transport in the big cities of France is debated, in particular because of the accidents caused by scooters, some of them are taking measures.

In Bordeaux, no ban on self-service scooters, but regulation with very concrete measures put in place by the environmental municipality since last November.

Paris: self-service electric scooters prohibited for minors

800 parking spaces for 700 scooters

"Today, in Bordeaux, you only have two operators per machine. Then, on their use, there are two very important rules. It is the obligation to park in identified places, with more than 800 places for 700 machines. The second thing is the speed limit, that is to say that there will be prohibited areas. We will no longer be able to drive in these places because the speed of the electric motor will be restricted since these are pedestrian areas. In all the meeting areas, which we call the limited sector, the speed will drop to ten kilometers per hour. When the scooter arrives in a pedestrian area, the engine drops or stops, " explains Didier Jeanjean, deputy mayor of Bordeaux.

For Thomas and Quentin, two users of the electric scooter, these measures are necessary.

"It's a good thing that there are reserved places. This avoids that there are scooters everywhere", underlines the first.

"They should issue a permit instead of putting speed limits. Because it's more people who are dangerous than the speed of the scooter," adds the second.

The municipality is giving itself a year to really measure the impact of this regulation.
