Of a cohort, 18-year-olds, about 100,000 boys and girls, about a third enroll, and around a third of them then do the dirty work.

But based on the Armed Forces' stated needs, it will not be enough.

- We don't have enough data among our young people to handle it and the main reason is the demands the Defense makes on the conscripts, says André Nilén, responsible for the musters at the Duty and Examination Agency in Malmö.

Many who do not pass the physical exams

It is mainly during the physical and medical tests that many do not meet the requirements.

- The requirements remain at the same level as when we had a professional defence, says André Nilén, head of testing South.

Even those who don't want to may have to model

According to the Swedish National Service's analysis, almost half of a cohort will have to enlist in 10 years' time, and in order to produce enough conscripts, the requirements need to be lowered and the voluntary nature reduced.

- When conscription was revived in 2017, the focus was that it would be based on the individual's interest and will, but when we look ahead, we may have to enroll people who are not interested, says André Nilén, responsible for the musters at the Duty and Examination Board in Malmö.
