The driver of a snow removal machine who, on February 29, 2020, had run over and killed a 78-year-old man in Les Deux Alpes (Isère), was tried on Tuesday by the Grenoble Criminal Court (Isère).

The defendant was given a nine-month suspended prison sentence and a fine of 600 euros for "manslaughter", reports Le Dauphiné Libéré.

The victim was the former mayor of Brassac-les-Mines (Puy-de-Dôme).

This septuagenarian ended his vacation with his wife and their 4-year-old granddaughter on the day of the incident.

He had just loaded his car for departure when he slipped on the ice in the parking lot.

Probably injured, he could not get up.

It was then that he was run over by the Caterpillar snowplow.

Also implicated, the company France Déneigement, for which the driver worked, was released.

Aged 57, the defendant did not appear at the hearing on January 3.

Untraceable for several months, he was condemned at the end of the deliberations in his absence.
