The independence movement is broken.

The demonstration called before the Spanish-French summit that is being held at the Museo Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, which was supposed to show muscle in the streets and reconsider sovereignty, has served to show the shortcomings of a movement that is increasingly divided.

The most graphic image was of the ERC leader, Oriol Junqueras, leaving the event long before he ended up being chased by half a hundred protesters, booing and shouting "botifler" (traitor), "licker" and "butler". it was Macron," an attendee said when he saw him go by.

And that the protest passed calmly.

From early morning a giant 'estelada' was deployed on the stairs of the Montjuïc fountains and protesters began to arrive.

According to the Urban Police, there were 6,500 who protested the presence of Pedro Sánchez and Emmanuel Macron, although the organizers, the Consell per la República, Òmnium and the ANC, ended the act long before the start of the summit.

About 50 buses came from all over Catalonia with protesters,

Oriol Junqueras arrived earlier and told the media that "independence is alive" and that the "conflict between a large part of Catalonia and Spain can only be resolved by voting and with self-determination" since the "repression continues."

He added that "at least amnesty" is lacking and the steps of de-judicialization initiated with the reform of the Penal Code that suppresses sedition and reduces embezzlement must be continued, although he remarked that "not enough."

However, Junqueras along with other ERC representatives stayed outside the place where the organizers of the event gathered and where the CUP and JxCaT were, with Laura Borras at the helm.

Numerous cries of "Puigdemont president", "independence" and "out with the occupation forces" were heard.

At that time there was only an isolated booing of Junqueras or some insult such as "botifler" and it was not until a group of protesters noticed him that they approached and started whistling and shouting "traitor" or "butler".

The tension increased and that was when Junqueras and his security team decided to leave the protest that had not yet ended.

A group of people followed him repeating the boos and insults against the ERC leader until he got into a car and left.

Days before, the ANC made sure that these possible attacks on Esquerra were understood in the protest against the decision of President Pere Aragonès to receive Macron and Sánchez.

However, these attacks on the Republicans show that the independence movement has entered a path of no return, far from the unity of action of the most demanding years of the
