Russian Sukhoi Su-25 fighter planes, Czech-designed Albatros L-39 fighters and Mi-8 helicopters dating from the Soviet era were received by the Malian authorities on Thursday January 19, noted the correspondent of the AFP in Bamako.
This delivery of military equipment by Russia included at least ten devices, according to the count of the news agency.
The Malian junta did not provide details on the extent of this new proof of military support from Moscow.
This is indeed the last delivery of its kind made public by the authorities.
Similar transfers had taken place in March and August 2022. The authorities say they are buying the devices, but have never provided more details, on the amounts for example.
The junta in power since 2020 is accused of having brought in the Russian paramilitary group Wagner at the end of 2021, with actions decried in various countries.
The military, who pushed for the break with France, deny and invoke a long-standing partnership revived with Russia and its army.
Extending the range of the Malian army
Malian Air Force Chief of Staff Major General Alou Boi Diarra spoke of a "build-up" during the Russian equipment delivery ceremony, which "almost became a routine".
The devices delivered are intended to support the troops on the ground, where the fight against the jihadists is fought, he said.
The junta claims to have regained the initiative against the jihadists.
Experts dispute his military proclamations.
The new planes and helicopters should enable the military to extend their range of action and quickly strike enemies who mainly practice surprise attacks and retreat before any response, the army said.
