At the call of several unions, hundreds of thousands of people gather this Thursday to demonstrate against the pension reform.

Many disruptions are expected in the transport sector but also in schools, hospitals, refineries and the public service.

Only a few hours after the presentation of the pension reform project by Elisabeth Borne on January 10, eight unions were already announcing a vast day of strike and mobilization for January 19.

According to information from Europe 1, between 550,000 and 750,000 demonstrators are expected in the streets everywhere in France this Thursday.

Rallies which will be accompanied by strikes in the transport sector, education but also energy and the public service. 

The main information:

  • Hundreds of thousands of demonstrators pound the pavement everywhere in France this Thursday to affirm their opposition to the pension reform

  • Transport will be idling all day, especially in Île-de-France where several metro lines will not run 

  • The first union of the primary school has expected more than 70% of strikers this Thursday.

In protest, EDF agents lower electricity production

This vast mobilization even began on Wednesday in the energy sector.

To show their opposition to the project, EDF agents lowered electricity production without causing power cuts.

Earlier in the week, the secretary general of the CGT Federation of Mines and Energy said he wanted to deprive elected officials who support the pension reform of electricity. 

Details of transport disruptions

Metro, bus, RER, planes... The transport sector will be one of the most impacted by this vast day of mobilization.

In Île-de-France, the RATP foresees very disrupted traffic with certain metro lines closed and others only operating at peak times.

The number of TER and Transilien trains will be drastically reduced and TGV traffic will also be slowed down.
