A 69-year-old woman died in an apartment fire in Taunusstein (Rheingau-Taunus district) on Thursday night.

According to initial investigations, arson cannot be ruled out, said a spokesman for the West Hesse police headquarters in Wiesbaden early Thursday morning.

According to the fire department, the resident of the apartment was able to get out of the apartment.

According to the information, fire and smoke spread to the hallway.

The 69-year-old woman wanted to get to safety across the hall and died on the spot.

After the fire was extinguished and the stairwell was smoke-free, the other residents of the apartment building were evacuated.

Two other people were taken to hospital with injuries.

The building is currently uninhabitable.

The evacuated residents were accommodated by the city of Taunusstein and looked after by both the rescue service and emergency chaplains, it said.
