A 22-year-old man died Wednesday evening in a pile-up between four cars and a heavy goods vehicle, on an icy highway near Anglet in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

The victim's car, which was traveling on the A63, got stuck in the back of the "semi-trailer type" heavyweight, the firefighters said in a press release.

Six other people involved were examined by the emergency services before being "left on the spot".

The highway was closed for more than two hours during the intervention.

The firefighters recall that the conditions "were poor at the time of the accident, in particular with patches of ice on both sides of the road".

The Pyrénées-Atlantiques were on Wednesday evening in orange snow and ice vigilance.

Vigilance still maintained this Thursday.
