Today, Thursday, official Iranian media quoted Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian as warning European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell - during a phone call - of the consequences of including the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the list of terrorist organizations.

According to Iranian reports, Abdollahian likened this step to someone who "shoots himself in the feet."

This comes after the European Parliament called on the European Union yesterday, Wednesday, to classify the Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, accusing it of suppressing demonstrators in Iran and supplying drones to Russia.

A widely adopted text, added to the annual report of the common foreign policy, said that members of the European Parliament during a plenary session "call on the Union and its member states to include the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the European Union's list of terrorist organizations."

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos, that she supports the inclusion of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the list of terrorist organizations to respond to the "violation" of human rights in Iran.

Relations between European Union member states and Tehran have deteriorated in the past few months as efforts to revive the nuclear deal falter.

Tehran has arrested a number of European citizens on charges of spying or inciting protests against the government, while the European Union is increasingly criticizing the "ongoing campaign of violence against demonstrators in Tehran, which included the execution of some of them."
