Journalist Maria Ressa, who was awarded the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize, and her news site Rappler, were acquitted on Wednesday of tax fraud charges.

- These accusations were politically motivated, an incredible abuse of power, says Ressa in a statement, according to Reuters.

- Today facts win, truth wins, justice wins, she says.

Ressa has been an outspoken critic of former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and his controversial war on drug trafficking, which has left thousands dead.

Several lawsuits

Maria Ressa is charged in three additional lawsuits in the Philippines, including violations of the Foreign Financing Act and Internet defamation.
