The discovery was made as UN troops patrolled the province of Ituri, where the local population had suffered several violent attacks by the Codeco militia, which has been blamed for a series of ethnically motivated massacres in the area.

- Monusco (the UN peacekeeping force) calls on the Congolese legal system to investigate the attacks and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice, says Farhan Haq.

Ituri province borders Uganda where violence has increased in recent weeks after a teacher was killed and different ethnic groups carried out acts of revenge against each other.

According to human rights groups, at least 80 people have lost their lives in the attacks since New Year.
