Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced a meeting with his counterparts from Ankara and Damascus to discuss the Syrian issue.

"Turkey, as you know, supports the normalization of relations with Damascus," Lavrov said in a televised press conference yesterday.

He added that Russia was asked to mediate between the two neighboring countries, explaining that a meeting of foreign ministers was being prepared for this.

"One of the biggest problems is Idlib," Lavrov said.

He added that Turkey should separate pro-Turkish forces there from Jabhat al-Nusra, which Moscow and Damascus classify as terrorists.

Lavrov added that the joint Turkish-Russian patrols on the main highway to Aleppo have not yet entered into force.

Lavrov said Moscow understood Turkey's concerns about what Ankara considers dangerous Kurdish fighters in Syria.

Defense officials from Turkey, Syria and Russia held talks at the end of last year, in an attempt to normalize relations between Ankara and Damascus, after years of the Syrian war.
