Russian authorities announced Wednesday that they shot a soldier who had fled a military base, and several local media reported that he had left his unit to escape the fighting in Ukraine.

The authorities in the Lipetsk region in western Russia said that "Dmitry Perov, wanted for fleeing from a military unit voluntarily and without permission, has been located and liquidated," according to a statement on Telegram that did not give any details about his death.

The local channel of the VGTRK network reported that the 31-year-old soldier had fled from the "special military operations zone of Ukraine" and was wanted in the Voronezh and Lipetsk regions.

According to media outlets, he was carrying a submachine gun and grenades, and was trying to go to his village in the Lipetsk region.
