Muharrem Demirok is to renounce his Turkish citizenship, to ensure that in the role of party leader there will be no obstacles in the future in terms of access to meetings or information, the Center Party's press service told TT, which Aftonbladet was the first to tell about.

Municipal council in Linköping

Demirok started the process for that in connection with the election committee asking him in December if he wants to become party leader, according to the Center.

Demirok was until recently a municipal councilor in Linköping, but has since been elected to the Riksdag last autumn.

Last week he was nominated by the selection committee to succeed Annie Lööf.

Could be vulnerability

According to Aftonbladet, Demirok became a Swedish citizen in 1997 at the age of 21.

Dual citizenship can be a vulnerability that can be exploited by a foreign power that wants to obtain protected information about Swedish conditions, according to the Security Police.

SVT is looking for Muharrem Demirok for a comment.
