In a planned bill, the British government also wants to ban so-called conversion therapies for changing sexual identity, which are aimed at transgender people.

The draft ban on so-called conversion therapies in England and Wales will "protect everyone, including those who are targeted because of their sexuality or being transgender," Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan said.

Accordingly, the draft should be published soon, but Donelan did not give a specific date.

So-called conversion therapies aim to specifically change the sexual orientation of the “patients”.

Activists welcomed the announcement that transgender people would be included in the bill banning "conversion therapy".

LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer.

The British government had so far delayed passing such a law and tried to exclude transgender people from it.

However, Culture Secretary Donelan said the law should not prevent "parents or doctors" from having "legitimate conversations" about "gender issues" in children or young adults.

On Monday, the British government announced that it would block a controversial Scottish judiciary reform aimed at making it easier to recognize gender reassignment surgery.

Scotland's Minister Alister Jack said he feared this could undermine UK-wide gender equality legislation.

This threatens a legal dispute between London and Edinburgh.

In Germany, so-called conversion therapies have been banned since 2020.

Violations can be punished with imprisonment for up to one year.
