The president of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, has announced on Tuesday a sanction that implies a

30-day suspension of parliamentary activity and allowances for the PSOE MEP Mónica González

for the "psychological harassment" that she exerted on three of her parliamentary assistants.

The punishment is the result of the conclusions of the European Parliamentary Advisory Committee in charge of examining complaints about harassment between parliamentary staff and MEPs, which considers that

the treatment of the socialist politician towards three members of her team "constituted psychological harassment"

, as explained by Metsola at the beginning of the day of the plenary meeting in Strasbourg (France).

Specifically, Metsola has detailed that the sanction entails the suspension of González's parliamentary activity for a month -although this will not affect his right to vote-, as well as the loss of the daily allowance for the same period, which which in practice means stopping income of just over 10,000 euros, at a rate of 338 euros per day in per diems.

In this way, the sanction, which the MEP can appeal, adds a punishment of five days for the harassment of a person on her team, fifteen days for her behavior towards a second and ten days for the case of a third.

Asked about this at a press conference, the leader of the Socialists and Democrats (S&D) group in the European Parliament,

Iratxe García

, said that the group has "absolute respect" for the sanction set by Metsola and has assured that it will be applied " the same sanction" within the same group.

García, who has specified that she was not speaking as the head of the Spanish socialist delegation but rather the European one, has clarified that the social democratic group "has just heard the news" when the president of the European Parliament has announced it in plenary session, so she does not know yet the details of the case or the analysis of the commission that has examined the matter.
