Nearly 42,500 failures were recorded in 2022, according to Altares.

While the number of business insolvencies recorded remains below pre-Covid levels, these insolvency statistics have accelerated at a record pace.

Especially among craftsmen and their managers.

2022 has been a black year for French entrepreneurs.

42,500 failures were recorded last year, according to Altares.

Safeguards, receiverships or direct liquidations… These default statistics remain below pre-Covid levels.

But they have never increased so much over one year: +50% between 2021 and 2022.

Five professions particularly affected

And among the most affected sectors, five trades alone account for a fifth of the defects, explains Thierry Millon, director of studies at Altares.

"Artisan masons, bakeries which are currently being talked about a lot, cafes, hairdressers, but also catering. More than 90% of the companies that have fallen are companies with fewer than ten employees".

Companies: why the increase in the number of failures should be qualified

Frontline catering

In catering, the number of failures has even doubled in one year and is approaching pre-Covid crisis levels.

"These structures have not filed for bankruptcy before. These are structures that have been very supported during the Covid phase. And at the same time, today their return to business is brutal, because the client does not is not there as they would have liked", notes Thierry Million.

And this rise in failures should not stop there.

Between the end of whatever the cost, the slowdown in consumption and sometimes financial difficulties, for all these craftsmen and their managers, the year 2023 risks being much more complicated than last year.
