On Monday, the 60-year-old Italian mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro was arrested in the city of Palermo after he had been on the run from the police for 30 years.

Messina Denaro, leader of the notorious Sicilian mafia Cosa Nostra, is suspected, among other things, of having been involved in a series of deadly bombings and the murders of mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino in the 1990s.

- Messina Denaro has said himself that he murdered so many people that it could fill a cemetery, says Jennifer Wegerup.

The arrest does not mean that mafia activities in Italy cease, emphasizes Wegerup.

However, it has a great symbolic value, she believes.

- It shows that you can never be sure of having escaped.

It has been 30 years.

It shows that the state is constantly fighting the mafia and not resigning.

Although it is so incredibly powerful and rich and exists at all levels in society, the fight continues, so that's why it was important, she says.

What is known about Messina Denaro's life on the run?
