The petrol company Skelleftebränsle has filling stations with clean diesel, i.e. diesel without mixing in biofuels, in the northern counties, especially Norrbotten and Västerbotten.

Now Circle K and OKQ8 also choose to start selling it for three months this winter.

- The customers demand it and we have to meet the needs in order to be able to compete on equal terms, says Mikael Hansson who is finance manager for OK Västerbotten.

Pays a higher environmental premium

According to the reduction obligation, gas stations must mix biofuels with fossil fuels so that emissions decrease more and more every year.

From 2022, it is required that there must be a 30 percent admixture of renewable and fossil-free fuels in diesel.

- Instead, we pay a higher environmental premium to fulfill the reduction obligation, says Per-Erik Jakobsson, who is CEO of Skelleftebränslen.

Companies that do not meet the reduction obligation must pay a fee or compensate by mixing more biofuel into other fuels.

"Leads to increased emissions"

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency believes that it will be a problem if many choose to opt out of the reduction obligation.

- This then leads to increased emissions, says Sara Almqvist, head of climate analysis at the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

- I would have liked the customers to run on 100 percent renewables.

It's a product that works perfectly, says Mikael Hansson who is finance manager for OKQ8 Västerbotten.
